What is a Thermal Barrier Coating?

A thermal barrier coating protects its component from prolonged heat loads. The most common material used in TBC is yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), which can resist thermal shock and fatigue. YSZ is typically deposited by plasma spraying and HVOF spraying. Common structures that TBC is applied to include combustor cans, turbine blades, ducting and nozzle guide vanes.
